Here’s a little story about the types of things we do for our clients on a regular basis. I had a client whose grandmother passed away, and she lived in a city about 3 hours away. She was in charge of getting the house ready for sale, and cleared of its contents. The house’s contents could have been featured in an episode of “Hoarders” and she was feeling pretty overwhelmed, especially in light of still grieving the loss of her Grandma, not living nearby, and having a houseful of busy teenagers.

I went and met with the family, and we talked about what needed to be done to show the house in its best light, keeping in mind that it would still be considered a fixer, as there was too much deferred maintenance to bring it up to speed. We discussed ways to make the bedrooms more appealing, as we needed to maximize the market value, so window treatments were removed and furniture was moved around to show the home in its best light.

I also did things like have the landscaping cleaned up, which was no small feat in its overgrown state, and had the furnace serviced and old carpet removed to uncover hardwood floors. In some cases we recommend estate sale professionals who can have the home’s valuables sold, but there wasn’t much of value in this case, so I arranged for different charities to come by and take the contents, along with garbage haulers who took the junk away. It took a couple weeks, but eventually we had the house empty and ready to go. It was a big help to the seller as I was able to meet all the various contractors and donation people at the house so she wouldn’t have to travel to Seattle to handle it.
